Why Investing in Girls Is a Strategy for Us All

When I left my hometown in rural Maryland for college, I had no idea just how transformative that decision would be. I still vividly remember my Open House visit to the historically women’s college campus I would call home for the following four years: students stretching out across the grassy quad with books, discussing current events in the coffee shop, and designing STEM prototypes in the design center. That day, I saw what possibility looked like. I saw who I could become, and I chose her.
Now, as the Impact Coordinator at Girl Talk, I carry that same vision forward: one where every girl, no matter her zip code or background, is supported and encouraged to become the leader she already is. Bringing this vision to life starts with expanding how we define investment.
Expanding What We Mean by “Investment”
Supporting girls is strategic. We can start with holistic recognition of all girls as assets to their communities, families, and the future. Investment is often a word we use to consider our financial health, but it doesn’t always look like a one-time deposit into a savings account.
Sometimes, investment looks like carving out space for girls to see themselves in each other, and in leadership. It looks like a peer mentor offering encouragement on a hard day. It looks like a middle schooler trying guided meditation for the first time. It can even look like practicing self-reflection and positive self-talk—all of which we build into our emotional wellness lessons in the Girl Talk Curriculum.
Building Confidence That Lasts
Adolescence is a vulnerable, high-impact time in a girl’s life. We know that girls are most likely to experience a sharp decline in confidence between the ages of 8-14, with a 30% drop by age 12 (Shipman & Kay, 2024). That’s why our work at Girl Talk starts as early as 4th grade.
Girl Talk equips peer mentors, teen girls, with tools to facilitate lessons in everything from body image to healthy relationships with family and friends. These spaces, both IRL and digital, are where girls practice emotional resilience and learn to support each other. And through powerful conversations, leaders gain tools and resources they carry into adulthood.
That’s what makes our model unique. By focusing on the whole girl—her voice, her emotions, her relationships, and her leadership potential—we help shape girls into confident, courageous, and connected changemakers.
Girls Who See It, Believe It
One of the most powerful things about Girl Talk is that our leaders look like their mentees. Our peer-to-peer model isn’t just about proximity in age. It’s about representation, empathy, and belonging. When girls see someone just a few years older leading with compassion and confidence, the distance between “them” and “me” disappears.
Research shows that friendships during adolescence are strongly linked to resilience (Haddow et al., 2021), which in turn supports mental health, academic outcomes, and long-term well-being. Centering connection and fostering social bonds grounded in leadership and service, especially in our post-Pandemic world, is developmentally vital for the girls we serve.
Our Girls’ Futures Start Now
When we invest in girls, we’re cultivating the future of education, governance, entrepreneurship, the arts, and science. We’re building a future that’s more inclusive, innovative, and resilient.
At Girl Talk, we envision a world where all girls live confidently, lead fearlessly, and support one another. Your support, whether through advocacy or a donation, makes this vision real.
