How do I start a Girl Talk Chapter? Expand

Visit the "Start a Chapter" section of the website!

How much does Girl Talk cost? Expand

Girl Talk is absolutely FREE. We are dedicated to ensuring that all girls have access to this leadership opportunity without a financial obstacle.

Who can start a Girl Talk Chapter? Expand

Any high school girl (rising 9th-12th grade) can start and lead a Chapter!

Advisers are required to be over the age of 18 and not currently in high school. Advisers must consent to a background check and never have been convicted of a felony.

If you are looking for a leadership opportunity and have a passion for mentoring the next generation of women and girls, then we would love for you to learn more and apply to join Girl Talk!

How many Girl Talk Leaders does it take to start a Chapter? Expand

It only takes one (1) high school girl committed to serving as your Leader to start a Chapter, but there is no limit to the number of Leaders your Chapter may have.

We recommend a 1:5 ratio of one (1) Leader to every five (5) middle school girls that attend. This helps with developing relationships and dividing into small groups for discussion and activities.

Is there a Leader Contract? Expand

Yes, please click here to view. The Leader Contract must be uploaded with your online Chapter application.

Please remember, for Leaders under the age of 18, we ask that your parent/guardian must sign your contract as well.

Where are Girl Talk Chapters started? Expand

Anywhere! Girl Talk is currently in 48 U.S. states and a total of 10 countries. The curriculum topics are universal and can be adapted to the particular group using them.

The majority of our Chapters are in schools, but we also have Chapters that meet in libraries, community centers, places of worship, parks, clinics, etc.

Can I start a Chapter outside of the United States? Expand

Of course! We have a number of successful international Chapters.

Please note that our curriculum is currently only available in English.

I work full-time. Can I be an Adviser and hold my Chapter meetings in the evening? Expand

Yes! Our goal is to reach as many middle and high school girls as possible.

Our Chapters meet throughout the week and weekend at all different times.  Whatever works best for your Chapter, works for us as well.

How often does Girl Talk meet? Expand

Girl Talk suggests that Chapters meet once a week for one hour. Individual circumstances may cause certain Chapters to operate on a different schedule. Some Chapters meet once or twice a month, due to scheduling conflicts and for varying amounts of time.

We do require all of our Chapters to meet at least once a month during the school year to help develop mentoring relationships and better their leadership skills.

How much time is a Leader expected to put into Girl Talk? Expand

A Chapter Leader should expect to serve two to three hours per week.  At least one hour should be spent preparing for the meeting and one hour of actual meeting time.

Chapter Leaders are responsible for planning the weekly lesson; calling members or sending a mass e-mail as a weekly reminder; and/or writing cards/notes to encourage, motivate, and celebrate the girls in their Chapter.

Do Leaders and participants do this for multiple years? Expand

Absolutely!  Girl Talk Leaders can be in 9th-12th grades and it is our hope that 8th-grade Girl Talk participants will aspire to become Girl Talk Leaders upon entering 9th grade, creating a legacy and ongoing program.

The very first Chapter started in 2002 and is still meeting today, so we encourage transitioning to new Leaders and Advisers as current Leaders and Advisers graduate or move. If you need help with transitioning to a new Leader or Adviser, please contact us.

Are Girl Talk Chapter meetings supervised? Expand

Yes.  Each Girl Talk Chapter is required to have a Chapter Adviser present at every meeting.

Advisers are required to be over the age of 18 and not currently in high school. Advisers must consent to a background check and never have been convicted of a felony.

Are there any requirements for a middle school girl to be a part of Girl Talk? Expand

No, come as you are! You can come to every meeting or pop in once a month; we are happy to have you whenever you can participate.
