Meet Girl Talk’s 2019 Natural Life Give, Love, Laugh Scholarship Winner

We are so proud and honored to announce that Alyssa Howie has been named Girl Talk’s 2019 Natural Life Give, Love, Laugh Winner! Alyssa is the Leader of the Spencer County Girl Talk Chapter in Fisherville, KY, and we are so inspired by her story!

Girl Talk has opened opportunities for me to find my calling for helping children…I mentor middle school girls who are struggling with self-confidence, anxiety, and depression. My role is to be an outlet for these girls, giving them advice and lending a listening ear for those who just need to express their feelings…Girl Talk has impacted my passions and goals in life, and I am beyond blessed to be a Leader for Girl Talk.

Along with leading Girl Talk girls’ groups, I take charge of the Spencer County Backpack Buddy Program; the Backpack Buddy Program provides low-income students with weekend meals…This has been an eye-opening experience, as I have witnessed the large amounts of food it takes to provide for each child. As a result of this awareness, I coordinated a Backpack Buddy Food Drive by partnering with our local grocery, Country Mart. As community members are grocery shopping, they identify Backpack Buddy food items through labels that are spread throughout the isles. After food items are purchased, they are placed in a decorative shopping cart towards the entrance. Several times a week I collect the donated items and bring them to schools in the Spencer County School District for the Backpack Buddy Program.

After college, I desire to return to Spencer County and work with the Youth and Family Resource Centers…Through Backpack Buddies…I was inspired to initiate a community service project that will benefit the students, as well as give the community an opportunity to donate towards the Backpack Buddy Program. I plan to continue to impact the Spencer County community for the rest of my life. I have a passion for helping others and with food insecurity awareness I know this issue can be impacted positively. I will pursue my passion and help students no matter the circumstance. I want to make a difference in this world and make my community a better place.”

Way to go, Alyssa! You have a bright future ahead, and we cannot wait to see where it takes you!
