Jaya’s Girl Talk Story

I was first introduced to the Girl Talk community by my mom during the summer before I entered 5th grade, and it has changed my life ever since. She signed me up for Girl Talk Camp, and until we arrived on the first day, I had no idea what to expect. When I showed up, I was overwhelmed by counselors wearing tutus and waving around big posters, welcoming every girl in carpool. It was a LOT. I became more curious to see what the deal was with Girl Talk, and throughout the week, I found my place as Girl Talk Camp made its way deep into my heart.

When I was in elementary school and even middle school, I was very insecure. I never really felt like I could be myself unapologetically until I found Girl Talk, in which I found a community of girls who wanted me to feel empowered and find my confidence. Since that first week, I have done my best to stay a part of Girl Talk. I returned as a camper for a few years until I became a Camp Counselorand I have continued for the last three years. This summer, I was lucky enough to be a Co-Lead Counselor at camp. I also joined the Ambassador Program in 2022, and I hope to keep being an influence at Girl Talk for years to come.

I never really felt like I could be myself unapologetically until I found Girl Talk, in which I found a community of girls who wanted me to feel empowered and find my confidence.

One of my best decisions was returning to camp for my second year (and every year since then). Girl Talk has taught me to embrace my confidence and be true to myself. I have become a better leader since practicing being more vulnerable, inclusive, and uplifting. While these are all skills I can apply to my leadership style for working with other people, they also help me be a better person for myself and to treat not only others but myself with kindness.

Girl Talk has been a massive part of my leadership journey and understanding how to build connections with others and inspire them. I know that without this organization, I would not be the confident leader I’ve become. I have learned to appreciate myself and the lovely people I have been surrounded with. Through Girl Talk, I’ve made many incredible friendships that I am beyond grateful for. I love the bonds that I have with other counselors and ambassadors but also with the campers who make me so appreciative of everything Girl Talk has to offer. I hope many people have similarly impactful stories from being a part of Girl Talk. It is truly a unique community, and I am so thankful I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of it.
