Martin Luther King Jr. Day
By Sam T.
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential, empowering, and inspirational leaders and advocates of peace and justice throughout the world. Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and valued as the driving force of the African American Civil Rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used his words and his actions to promote equality for all through the widespread campaign of nonviolent activism.
Through his passion, his personal connection with those being oppressed throughout the Southern U.S. solely based on the color of their skin, and his commitment to the persistence of nonviolent activism, he changed the lives of millions all over. His strength and persistence, despite being faced with nonstop injustice, negativity, and violence around him, are values that we must keep and honor in our own lives.
Today, the third Thursday in January, we remember the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We remember his outstanding commitment to bringing about true justice and equality to all through peaceful, nonviolent protests. We honor the sacrifice he made by committing his life to the battle for equality, and we uphold his values today in our own lives. We must remember never to let his voice fall silent, and to value the voices of everyone around us, just as Dr. Martin Luther King strove for. Today is a day of remembrance, and a day of looking towards the future, bright with the light of love and equality.
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
