Intern Back to School Q&A
Back to school season is here and we know that it can be really nerve-wracking. New classes, new teachers, new classmates… It’s a lot to handle.
But have no fear! Our intern Katherine N. has graciously agreed to give some back-to-school tips for those of you who might feel a bit anxious about entering a new school year.
What advice do you have for people who are nervous about going back to school?
Even with the 16+ years I’ve been a student, I still have some trouble shaking my back-to-school jitters. It’s strange, you think I’d be a pro at first days by now, but I’m here to tell you that that’s not always the case.
It’s completely normal to feel uneasy about going back to school. However, you shouldn’t let your unease consume you.
The most important step in overcoming your back-to-school jitters is to identify what it is that’s making you so nervous. Is it having to get used to a new schedule? Are you afraid that you won’t know anyone in your classes? Pinpoint the cause of your nervousness and try to think on the bright side.
For example, while it might be somewhat difficult being in a class full of strangers, think about all of the new friendships waiting to happen! All it takes is a simple “hello” to get the conversation started. Who knows, the girl sitting next to you in the polka dot skirt might end up being one of your closest friends!
How can I make the most of my experience this year?
Try to approach everything with a positive mindset. I know, I know, easier said than done, but I did say try.
Understand that things aren’t always going to go your way, but learn to appreciate the journey.
How can I have a successful school year?
Success doesn’t just come to you; you must always be willing to work towards it (I can feel you rolling your eyes at me right now, but it’s true!)
Make sure that you are doing everything you need to do, whether that be turning in assignments on time, asking questions about concepts you didn’t understand in class, or studying for a test that counts for 40% of your grade, always put the effort in.
Even if the outcome is not what you expected, you can be proud of yourself for making an attempt to do well and that in itself can be considered a success!
Any final piece of advice you’d like to share?
Don’t be scared to take risks.
For most of my life, I have struggled with doing things outside of my comfort zone. I’ve turned down opportunities because I was scared of failure and decided not to approach certain people because I was afraid of rejection. Every single time, I’ve regretted my actions.
In the last year or so, I’ve tried to make more of an effort to not play it so safe all of the time. I try not to think about the what-ifs and choose to approach new situations with optimism.
That’s why I encourage everyone reading this post to take risks every now and again. Not only can you open yourself up to new opportunities, you can learn so much about yourself and what you’re capable of!
I know that this blog post is riddled with clichés but most times the solutions to the problems that you might run into are quite plain to see! Just remember that everything will be A-OK.
