Hannah’s Girl Talk Story

Growing up, my earliest memories of self-esteem were a mixed bag of experiences, both uplifting and challenging. I vividly recall moments in middle school where I felt out of place, comparing myself to my classmates or just other societal pressures that girls at that age were going through at the time like confidence and overall voicing my opinion. Looking back to when I was in middle school, there were certain moments I found myself, doubting myself due to just how the environment was in middle school. There were specific moments when it came to group projects or any presentation we had to give, I would tend to stutter or avoid eye contact completely.

That’s where a significant turning point in my self-esteem journey came through my involvement with Girl Talk, a mentoring program focused on empowering young girls. The program created a safe space for us to share our experiences and challenges openly. Hearing the stories of other girls who faced similar struggles was transformative, revealing that I wasn’t alone in my insecurities. One particularly impactful experience occurred when I had to introduce a speaker in a session during the camp organized by Girl Talk.

Initially terrified at the thought of speaking in front of an audience, I found the courage to participate, encouraged by my peers and mentors. The positive feedback I received after speaking marked a significant milestone in my journey, teaching me the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone.

Throughout this process, the support from the Girl Talk community was invaluable, they celebrated my successes and offered comfort during setbacks, allowing me to internalize a more positive self-image. Reflecting on my younger self, I would emphasize the importance of self-compassion, encouraging her to embrace imperfections and celebrate small victories. To other young girls struggling with confidence and self-esteem, I would advise seeking out supportive communities, like Girl Talk, where sharing experiences can be healing.

Remember that everyone faces struggles, and it’s okay to ask for help. Focus on nurturing your passions, as they can empower you. Above all, be kind to yourself—self-esteem is a journey, and every step forward deserves celebration.
